Meelup Moon Rise Walk – this Saturday January 11, 2019
The Busselton Naturalists Club’s annual Meelup Moonrise Walk from Dunsborough to Meelup Beach is on again this coming Saturday January 11.
This is the first full moon for 2020 and the forecast of warm weather on the day should make for an enjoyable walk.
The easy 4km walk starts at 5.30pm from the boat ramp in Old Dunsborough on Bay View Crescent and follows the well-formed coastal track past Castle Rock Bay to Meelup.
A bus leaving from the car park of the former visitor centre on Peel Terrace at 5.00pm will take walkers from Busselton to Dunsborough at a cost of $10.00 per person.
At the end of the evening after the full moon has appeared, the bus will return people to their cars in Dunsborough without having to walk back along the coastal track. The bus will then return to Busselton.
The cost of this Meelup to Dunsborough service is just $5.00.
Walkers need to bring their own picnic meal, chairs, blankets, etc, to await the rising of the full moon over Geographe Bay.
The bus will transport picnic gear and non-walkers from Dunsborough to Meelup at no extra cost.
Seats can be booked by contacting Club president Bernie Masters on 9727 2474 or at email@example.com
In past years, over 100 people have taken part in this annual walk, often joining another 200 people at Meelup to enjoy the rise of the full moon.
The weather forecast for Saturday is for a warm day of about 32 degrees maximum but a cool night dropping down to an 11 degree minimum, so the walk will be held under perfect weather conditions but please bring appropriate clothing for the short wait while the full moon rises.
A family of ospreys has been nesting and successfully raising one young bird along the Dunsborough to Meelup section of track and it’s possible some whales might be seen in Geographe Bay.
This event is open to the public and families with children are most welcome to take part.
